The Flensburg Fjord is surprisingly rich in extraordinary producers: from Germany's oldest active rum house to award-winning farm cheesemakers. This guide takes you to the best regional addresses – all within 30 driving minutes from Villa Boreal.
Flensburg was once Germany's most important rum city – three distilleries keep this tradition alive
Flensburg's oldest active rum house — and one of the oldest in Germany — has been based since 1878 in the more than 300-year-old 'Marienburg' on Marienstraße. A.H. Johannsen is still an independent family business and keeps the Flensburg rum tradition alive with great care and a lot of handwork. The range includes around a dozen rum specialities from mild everyday rum to mature premium blends, plus Flensburg vodka, aquavit and various liqueurs. The shop in the Marienburg is one of the most atmospheric retail addresses in the entire city.

The Braasch wine and rum house on Rote Straße is Flensburg's second active rum house and one of the most beautiful shops in town. Founded in 1976 by Walter Braasch, the house keeps the Flensburg rum tradition alive with a classic range: Braasch rum following the 'Flensburg master recipe', vanilla rum, Braasch 1887 and various vintage blends. A special bonus: in the rear courtyard you'll find the Rum Manufactory Museum — free admission and a real insider tip. From June to October there are rum tastings every Wednesday at 16:00.

Between Glücksburg and Kappeln, in the heart of the Angeln landscape, lies Germany's northernmost fruit distillery. Dolleruper Destille has existed since 1990, is Bioland-certified and works almost exclusively with raw materials from Schleswig-Holstein. This is where the now widely known Knut Hansen Dry Gin is created, alongside Neptuns Rum from real cane juice, Noord Molt Whisky from regional barley and fine fruit brandies from orchard meadows. Almost all products carry the FEINHEIMISCH seal.

The most innovative farm in the entire region. The on-farm dairy was named Germany's best artisan cheese producer in 2023. Easier access without the long drive: the James Farm Market at Brauereiweg 21 in Flensburg-Sonwik sells all farm products, opens Tue–Sat 9–18, and hosts a small farmers market with regional producers at the weekend.
