VILLA BOREAL · BOCKHOLM · FLENSBURGER FÖRDE
March, April, and May on the Flensburg Fjord are the year's most underrated weeks. Think empty beaches, blooming crocuses, a heated pool from day one of the season, and the first sailors freeing their boats from winter storage. While the rest of northern Germany is still waiting for summer, the most beautiful season is just beginning here—and it costs half as much.

The fjord in April—the beach chairs are out, but no one is sitting in them yet.
In March, something almost imperceptible happens on the Flensburg Fjord. The lark is suddenly back, crocuses burst through the last frost, and the evening light lingers for twenty minutes longer—yet prices are still in the off-season. From 500 € per night, you can stay in the same house that costs double in July. With the same sauna, the same private jetty, the same four bedrooms.
What to do in March: take long walks on the Holnis peninsula as migratory birds return—great crested grebes and common eiders rest on the fjord, easily spotted with binoculars. The hiking trails are completely empty. And the crocus bloom in Husum is well worth a day trip: four million crocuses blossom in the castle park—one of Schleswig-Holstein's most spectacular spring phenomena. ~75 km, ~1 hour drive (see our event guide).
Evenings in March: a fire crackling in the beach house, a glass of red wine, the sound of open water outside, and the Nordic light already stretching long. It feels as if you've captured the season a month ahead of schedule.
"In March, the same villa costs half as much, and you have the peninsula to yourselves. It’s not a secret anymore—but it almost is."
In late March, or early April at the latest, something happens that devoted Villa Boreal guests wait for all year: the pool is switched on. Heated and available year-round, it’s kept at 28 degrees from the start of the season. Anyone who has ever slipped into the steaming pool on a cool April morning—air temperature 9 degrees, the fjord a steel-gray backdrop—knows this is a different kind of swimming. The senses are awake, the mind is clear, and the water is as warm as a bath. The sauna is right next door. Spring doesn't start with T-shirt weather. It starts with steam rising from cool water.
Easter is April's other main event. Schloss Glücksburg reopens with its full program—but without the summer queues. Families can enjoy egg hunts and petting zoos at farm attractions like Bögelhuus (see our guide for kids), while couples will find the fjord's cycling paths blissfully empty. The Holnis peninsula is in bloom: wild roses begin to bud, the heathland gains color, and on the cliffs, the beeches are a bright May green—only it's still April.
After New Year's Eve, Easter is the second-fastest booking period for families. If you're planning a visit, it's best to inquire at the beginning of the year. Read more in our Easter guide.
💡 Tip: From April, the first fresh catches arrive from the cutters—cod, flatfish, herring—straight off the boat in Langballigau (~15 min). Prepare a Good Friday meal with fish you've sourced yourself in the designer kitchen. See our guide to Regional Specialties.
In May, the region fully awakens. The restaurants are all open again, the beach chairs are out, and gaff-rigged sailboats from Denmark, Sweden, and the Netherlands suddenly appear in Flensburg's harbor. May is the month the fjord reclaims its maritime identity.
The main event is the Rum Regatta on Pentecost weekend. It's the largest gathering of historic sailing ships in the Baltic Sea—over 100 gaff-riggers, many more than a century old, convene in Flensburg's harbor. Three days of festive atmosphere, music, rum from the old town's warehouses, and a sight reminiscent of Brest or Plymouth. Watching the fleet set sail from the cliffs near Bockholm is an unforgettable experience.
Meanwhile, on Holnis, the kitesurfing season begins. The surf and kite school reopens, and on windy days, you'll see 30 kites in the air at once. If you've never stood on a board, a two-day beginner's course costs around 250 €. Find out more in our sailing and surfing guide.
And cycling: May is perfect for it. The paths are dry, the wind is moderate, and the routes to Holnis or further on to Geltinger Birk are at their most scenic—rapeseed fields are in bloom, the beeches are in full leaf, and the sea is no longer steel-gray but turquoise when the sun comes out.
What stands out most about Villa Boreal in the spring is the terrace's southern exposure. From mid-March, the morning sun is high enough to bathe the terrace in light—breakfast with coffee outside becomes the standard from April on. The garden returns to life: rhododendrons, forsythia, and later, the wild roses along the beach path. The air smells of damp earth and salt.
In the mornings, a fog sometimes settles on the water. The private jetty half-disappears into it, the gulls present only as a sound. If you get out of bed at the right time—six, six-thirty—you can watch the sun break through the mist. It’s an image that stays with you for the rest of the year.
And after a cold dip in the fjord—the water temperature in May is 9–12 °C, so truly cold—the sauna in the beach house takes on a different meaning than in summer. Hotter, more effective, more liberating. Three rounds, then a long afternoon nap on the terrace. That is spring on the fjord.
💡 Tip: In May, Bock 19 in Bockholmwik resumes its full opening hours—fresh smoked fish straight from the cutter, just a three-minute walk from the villa. The perfect stop after a hike along the fjord.
March still falls within the low season, starting from 500 €/night—the same price as in deep winter, but with significantly more daylight and nature beginning to stir. April and May are the mid-season, from 750 €/night. This is still well below the high season rate (950 €), yet you already get to enjoy the heated pool, the full restaurant season, and the first warm afternoons on the terrace.
Minimum stay: 3 nights. 4 nights over Easter and Pentecost. If you're planning to visit for the crocus bloom in Husum or the Rum Regatta, we recommend inquiring 4–6 weeks in advance—these weekends are the most popular of the entire spring season.
We are now accepting inquiries for the March to May 2026 season.
From 500 €/night in March, from 750 €/night in April. 3-night minimum stay. Heated pool from the start of the season, sauna, private jetty—and a fjord that is still all yours.
