„The grey town by the sea“ — that's what Theodor Storm, Husum's most famous son, called his home town. Today Husum is anything but grey: colourful gabled houses around the inner harbour, one of Northern Germany's prettiest pedestrian zones, the legendary crocus bloom in the castle park and fresh fish rolls straight from the cutter. From Villa Boreal it's around 1.5 hours via the A7 — perfect for a varied day trip.
WHY HUSUM?
Harbour, history and North Sea air
Husum is the secret capital of North Frisia: harbour town, market town, Storm town. The inner harbour right in the old town is unique — fishing cutters and sailing boats moored directly between the cafés. Add to that a surprisingly strong shopping scene with real hidden champions like the family-owned department store CJ Schmidt.
Tip: in spring (mid-March to early April) the castle park turns into a violet sea of flowers — Husum's crocus bloom with over 4 million blossoms is one of Northern Germany's most impressive natural spectacles.
One day in Husum — harbour, shopping & cuisine
From 09:00 to 19:30 — relaxed, with time for everything
We start early to enjoy the morning in the old town, indulge at lunchtime by the harbour and round off the day with shopping and a walk along the outer harbour. The whole day is walkable — central parking at Schiffbrücken or at Husumhus.

FOR
Everyone
Via the A7 to Husum
About 1.5 hours via Flensburg, the A7 towards Hamburg, and from Schuby onto the B201. In clear weather, a short stop at the Schobüll viewpoint with first views of the Wadden Sea is worth it.

Café Lübben or Café Bohne
Coffee break right in the old town. Café Lübben is a Husum institution with homemade cake, Café Bohne roasts its own coffee and is right by the market square.
Tip: Both cafés are a 2-min walk from the Schiffbrücken parking lot.

Stroll through Husum's centre
From the market square with St. Mary's Church through Krämerstraße to the inner harbour — Husum's landmark. Historic shrimp cutters lie directly between restaurants and ice-cream parlours. Few German towns let the water reach this far in.
Tip: The inner harbour is one of the few harbours in Germany right in the old town centre — a perfect photo spot.

Fish roll from the cutter or Restaurant Hafen
Take your pick: a classic shrimp roll directly from the cutter „Hauke“ at the harbour quay (a true Husum ritual!) or a sit-down lunch at „Hafen Husum“ with views of the water. Speciality: pan-fried plaice with shrimp and roast potatoes.
Tip: In summer, arrive early — outdoor seats by the harbour are highly sought after.

Theodor Storm House or Castle Museum
Two short cultural stops for those interested: the Theodor Storm House (Wasserreihe 31) shows the home of the „Schimmelreiter“ poet. For something royal, visit Husum Castle — the only surviving Renaissance building in Schleswig-Holstein.
Tip: Want both? Storm House first (more compact), then a leisurely stroll to the castle.

CJ Schmidt — the family department store since 1849
CJ Schmidt is a Husum legend: an owner-run department store on Großstraße — six floors of fashion, home, toys and a café. The Schmidt family runs the house in its fifth generation. It is considered one of the most beautiful department stores in Northern Germany and is THE go-to spot for Husum visitors.
Tip: Right opposite: Liesegang bookshop and lovely small boutiques like Töpferei am Markt — Großstraße is car-free and perfect for browsing.

A walk in the castle park
The castle park borders directly on the town centre — a green oasis with old trees, castle pond and gate. In spring (mid-March to early April) it transforms into the famous purple crocus sea with over 4 million blossoms.
Tip: Worth a stop outside the crocus season too — freely accessible, perfect for a quiet break.

Restaurant „Eucken“ or „Dragseth's Gasthof“
For dinner we recommend the stylish „Eucken“ by the market (regional cuisine, modern twist) or the traditional „Dragseth's Gasthof“ (Schleswig-Holstein's oldest tavern, since 1583). Both serve fresh North Sea fish dishes and cold Husum pilsner.
Tip: Reservation recommended, especially on weekends.

Home via the A7
Straight back via the B201 and A7 — arrival Villa Boreal around 21:00. On long summer evenings, a quick stop at Schobüll harbour for sunset over the Wadden Sea is worthwhile.

SEASONAL
Husum crocus bloom — March/April
Anyone visiting Husum in spring shouldn't miss the short detour to the castle park. Over four million purple crocuses turn the lawns around Husum Castle into a sea of blossoms. The bloom lasts only 2–3 weeks (usually mid-March to early April) and is celebrated with the traditional Crocus Festival — including the election of the Crocus Queen.
Admission to the park is free; the adjacent castle museum shows the life of the Dukes of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf.
Conclusion
Husum combines harbour romance, shopping pleasure and North German culinary culture in a small space. From Villa Boreal it's a rewarding day trip — particularly lovely during the crocus bloom in spring or in late summer when the quayside becomes everyone's favourite spot. Plan your stay on the fjord and discover the whole North German coast at your own pace.
