Flensburg's first and only specialty roastery – tucked away in a courtyard off Große Straße. On a good day you can smell the freshly roasted beans all the way out into the pedestrian zone. The team roasts in small batches and guides you at the bar by flavour profile; usually three different beans are on offer. Espresso, milk drinks and filter coffee at an exceptional level, alongside hand-crafted latte art and homemade vegan cakes. A rustic, hyggelig backyard atmosphere that feels fully booked almost every day.

Plan B Kaffeebar – Flensburg old town
Flensburg's best-known city café and the locals' regular for good coffee: Plan B Kaffeebar sits on the corner of Norderstraße and Oluf-Samson-Gang in the heart of the old town and serves espresso, cappuccino, flat white and filter coffee at a high level. Café Barista in the Holmhof – Flensburg
One of the most-mentioned café insider tips in Flensburg: Barista sits in the typical Flensburg courtyard of the Holmhof at Holm 43 – once you find it, you'll come back. Siemers Antik & Café – Flensburg
A unique experience: coffee and cake among antiques, porcelain and collector's pieces, all baked from family recipes handed down over generations. Café K am Südermarkt – Flensburg
"Slow Food" as a serious motto: right on Südermarkt square, open daily 9:00–18:00. Breakfast until 13:00 with an international selection from Portugal to Denmark, lunch 12:00–14:00, cake all day. Outside you sit in the middle of life on Südermarkt – on Wednesday and Saturday with the weekly market as a backdrop, the bustle of the stalls within touching distance. The closest real breakfast café from Villa Boreal – seven minutes' drive in the Glücksburg castle park. The café occupies the former gardener's house from 1833 and combines historic charm with homemade cakes and fresh breakfasts. Choose between the cosy Green Salon or the charming upstairs room. Bock 19 – Café & Restaurant, Bockholmwik
The café right next door – and therefore the most spontaneous coffee stop on the entire list. The Sieger family run Bock 19 right by the yacht club in Bockholmwik and serve regional, seasonal cuisine alongside a wide selection of homemade cakes and tortes. The view stretches far across the outer Flensburg Fjord all the way to Denmark. Reachable on the Fördestieg coastal path in about 25 minutes on foot – a dreamy morning walk along the cliff coast.

Strandcafé Holnis – Ostsee-Strandhaus, Holnis peninsula
At the tip of the Holnis peninsula – the northernmost mainland point of Germany – this beach café offers one of the most extraordinary panoramas in the region: views of the fjord, the Danish coast and the open Baltic all at once. Right on the Glücksburg spa promenade: the most modern beach bistro in the region with Nordic design – warm and cosy inside, maritime with sea air outside. Die Gaumenfreunde – Westerholz near Langballig
A small bistro café run by Christina Tiebel in Westerholz, a hamlet between Langballigau and the Angeln countryside – barely known, but warmly recommended by those in the know. Regional and seasonal cuisine made from high-quality, predominantly local produce, premium ingredients from organic producers. "A little paradise on this stressful earth", wrote one Tripadvisor guest. Variable opening hours – check ahead or give them a quick call.

Obstcafé & Erlebnishof Jensen – Sörup-Löstrup
On the Jensen family's strawberry farm in Sörup-Löstrup, in the heart of the Angeln countryside: homemade tortes baked fresh every day, cakes, homemade jams and pizza from the wood-fired oven. In summer pick-your-own in the fruit fields, beautiful open farm garden. Locals warmly recommend it as a cycling destination from Bockholm/Flensburg – the journey there is almost as lovely as the destination.

Hofcafé Bögelhuus – Erlebnishof, Angeln countryside
On the Bögelhuus adventure farm in the Angeln countryside: a farm café with homemade treats in the cosy interior or in the cottage garden, plus animals, a play area and seasonal farm activities for families.
