Glücksburg is small but rich in history and nature: this Baltic seaside resort on the Flensburg Fjord combines a Renaissance moated castle, fine sandy beaches, dense beech forests and, in Holnis, one of the most unspoilt peninsulas on the coast. Villa Boreal sits in Bockholm, just a few minutes from the town centre — you can reach most of Glücksburg's sights by bike.
Glücksburg Castle — cradle of royal houses
The white moated castle was built between 1582 and 1587 and seems to float on its lake. It is the ancestral seat of the House of Glücksburg, whose descendants still occupy the thrones of Denmark and Norway. The castle is open as a museum; opening hours and tours vary by season — check the current details before your visit.
Glücksburg Rose Garden
Near the castle, the rose garden displays hundreds of varieties, including many historic cultivars. The best time to visit is June and July, when the garden is in full bloom.
Beach promenade & Sandwig
The promenade along Sandwig beach is the heart of the resort: fine sand, beach chairs, cafés and views across to Denmark. Swim in summer; in autumn and winter it invites long walks in the fresh fjord air.
Glücksburg Forest
Old beech and mixed woodland surrounds the town, with trails leading to the steep coast. Our detailed article on Glücksburg Forest presents the best routes.
Holnis peninsula
With its nature reserve, cliff and lagoon, the Holnis peninsula is one of the quietest corners of the fjord. From its northern tip you look far across the water to Denmark — ideal for birdwatching and sunsets.
Guided tours & film town
Glücksburg has been the setting for well-known TV series. Guided town walks and the film location tour introduce original filming locations and local stories.
Water sports on the fjord
Sailing, stand-up paddling and surfing have a long tradition in Glücksburg. Beginners will find courses and rentals, while experienced sailors enjoy one of the finest sailing areas on the Baltic.
Combining Flensburg and Glücksburg
Glücksburg and Flensburg are only about 10 kilometres apart. Our tip: one day for the town with its harbour and merchant courtyards, one day for castle, beach and forest in Glücksburg. Both are quickly reached from Villa Boreal.
