Theme & animal parks for kids — both sides of the border

The region around the Flensburg Fjord is a treasure for families: within just one to two hours by car from Glücksburg you reach an extraordinary density of theme parks, animal parks and indoor attractions — on both the German and Danish side. From the world-classic Legoland Billund to the small and charming Gettorf Zoo, from Phänomenta Flensburg to the Holsten-Therme: here is an overview by category, with distances, age recommendations and insider tips.

Legoland Billund — the original (Denmark, ~110 km)

The original of all Legolands lies about 110 km north of Villa Boreal — a good 1:30 hr by car via the A7/E45. Opened in 1968 in the home town of the Lego inventors, Billund is the epitome of Danish family friendliness: around 65 million Lego bricks, the famous Miniland with global landmarks, nine themed worlds from Pirateland to Ninjago and rides for all ages from about three. Right next door: Lalandia Billund with Scandinavia's largest tropical aqua dome — perfect to extend with an overnight stay. Tip: online tickets are cheaper; high season is July/August, while May/June and September are calmer. Open roughly late March to early November.

Other Danish family parks — Universe, Givskud, Sommerland

Universe Sønderborg (~50 km, ~50 min) — interactive science and amusement park with over 200 hands-on activities about science, technology and nature, perfect for changeable weather. Givskud Zoo „Zootopia“ (~120 km, ~1:40 hr) — safari park you drive through in your own car: lions, elephants and giraffes up close. Sommerland Syd in Tinglev (~55 km, ~55 min) — classic Danish amusement park with water slides, carousels and over 50 free attractions after entry. Madsby Legepark in Fredericia (~110 km) — the city's free play park, ideal as a stop on the way to Billund. Knuthenborg Safaripark on Lolland (~280 km) is too far for a day trip — better with an overnight stay.

Animal parks in Schleswig-Holstein — Gettorf, Tolk, Eekholt

Tierpark Gettorf (~80 km, ~1:00 hr) — one of the loveliest small zoos in northern Germany, with kangaroos to touch, a meerkat enclosure, free-roaming peacocks and many petting contacts. Ideal for children aged 2 to 10. Tolk-Schau near Schleswig (~50 km, ~50 min) — family adventure park with a small zoo, over 100 attractions, summer toboggan run and indoor play halls — one of the most popular family destinations in the fjord region. Wildpark Eekholt (~120 km, ~1:30 hr) — native wildlife such as wolf, lynx and bison in spacious enclosures, raptor flight shows; better for nature-loving kids aged 6 and up.

Major theme parks in SH — Hansa-Park, Karls, Weissenhäuser Strand

Hansa-Park in Sierksdorf (~150 km, ~1:50 hr) — Germany's only theme park directly on the sea, with over 125 attractions, seven themed worlds and several roller coasters for older children and teenagers. Manageable as a day trip, more relaxed with an overnight stay on the Lübeck Bay. Karls Erlebnis-Hof Wankendorf (~140 km) — free admission, strawberry farm with maize labyrinth, potato-sack slide, animals and a live candy manufactory — perfect for younger children. Weissenhäuser Strand (~140 km) — holiday park with the large Adventure-Dschungelland (indoor adventure world, tropical pool), climbing forest, petting zoo and direct Baltic access; usable as a day trip too.

Indoor attractions in the region — Phänomenta, James Farm, Dampland

Phänomenta Flensburg (~22 km, ~25 min) — one of the best science centres in northern Germany: over 200 interactive stations on physics, perception and technology, perfect for rainy days and for children from 5 up to adults. James Farm Hörup near Süderlügum (~50 km) — huge indoor playworld with bouncy castles, trampolines, mini-quads and a petting zoo — geared at ages 2 to 12. Entdeckerland Dampland in Damp (~70 km, ~1:00 hr) — new indoor experience centre with climbing, water play and a mini farm, combinable with the Damp Baltic resort. All three are real bad-weather rescuers and open year-round.

Thermal baths & water worlds — Fördeland, Holsten, Damp

Fördeland Therme Glücksburg (~5 km, ~10 min) — right on the doorstep: salt-water pool with outdoor basin, sauna landscape and a children's adventure area. Wassersleben beach (~10 km) is the free summer alternative. Holsten-Therme Kaltenkirchen (~140 km, ~1:40 hr) — one of the largest adventure thermal baths in northern Germany with slide paradise, wave pool and a „Crocodile Island“ for kids. Damp Baltic resort (~70 km) offers indoor pool, tropical adventure bath and the new Entdeckerland in the same complex — ideal for a family day with everything under one roof.

    Practical tips for planning

Online tickets are 5–15 % cheaper at almost every park and save queueing at the gate. Danish parks accept euro but usually give change in kroner — paying by card is easier everywhere. High season is July/August (peak prices, full parks); cheaper and calmer are May/June and early September. For day trips to Billund or Sierksdorf, start early — drive plus a full day in the park plus the return is a long day. For indoor stops like Phänomenta or James Farm, 3–4 hours are enough — a good half day in bad weather. Holiday-park day tickets (Damp, Weissenhäuser Strand) are often cheaper than expected and include pool plus play worlds.

    A family holiday with choice

Families staying at the Villa Boreal have an almost unique selection: classics like Legoland in 1:30 hr, small zoos and indoor venues in 25 to 60 minutes, thermal baths right next door. Both a wet week and a sunny one are easy to fill. Now request a family stay and plan the holiday around the kids' favourite parks.
