Live Sports in Flensburg — Watch Handball, Football & Boxing

Flensburg is a sports city — and an unusually big one for its size. No other German city under 100,000 inhabitants offers Champions League-level handball, professional football, international boxing galas and a lively club scene packed so closely together. As a guest at Villa Boreal, you're often just 20 minutes by car from sitting inside the legendary 'Hell of the North' or on the stand of a regional-league football match. An overview for sports-loving visitors.

SG Flensburg-Handewitt — the Hell of the North

SG Flensburg-Handewitt is the heart of the city's sporting scene and one of Europe's most successful handball clubs. Multiple German champions, German Cup winners and even EHF Champions League winners in 2014 — the 'SG' has been at the very top for decades. Home games are played at the GP JOULE Arena (formerly Campushalle, then FLENS-ARENA) in the south of Flensburg, a futuristic venue with around 6,300 seats and an atmosphere that players from across the world rave about. The hall is considered one of the loudest in Europe — fans rightly call it the 'Hell of the North'.

Since opening on 2 December 2001, almost three million spectators have streamed into the arena. Anyone who has experienced 6,000 people stand and chant 'One city — one club' against rivals like Kiel, Magdeburg or Barcelona will never forget that evening.

    Tickets & schedule

Home games are usually held on Thursday or Sunday evenings. Tickets are available via the official SG ticket online shop, at various pre-sale outlets or directly at the SG fan shop at Nikolaistraße 8 in central Flensburg — right next to Holmpassage. Prices range from around €22 (upper-tier standing) to €75 (premium seat). Top games against THW Kiel or European opponents are often sold out weeks in advance — book early.

    Address & getting there

GP JOULE Arena, Campusallee 4, 24943 Flensburg. About 20 minutes by car from Villa Boreal. Parking right at the venue is limited — arriving early or using park-and-ride makes life easier. Tip: have dinner at Sonwik harbour or in the city centre beforehand and take a taxi to the arena — by far the most relaxed option.

SC Weiche Flensburg 08 — football at the Manfred-Werner-Stadion

If you prefer the open air, head to SC Weiche Flensburg 08. The club currently plays in the Regionalliga Nord — Germany's fourth division — and is a household name in Northern German amateur football. Home matches take place at the Manfred-Werner-Stadion at Bredstedter Straße 2 in Flensburg-Weiche. The ground has carried the name of its long-serving patron since 2002; 4,000 fans fit in, and on a good day the atmosphere is surprisingly close to that of bigger stadiums.

Tickets are pleasantly affordable: covered seat €14 (concessions €12, students €10), uncovered seat or standing €10 (concessions €8, students €6). Children under 12 enter free in the standing area — a perfect family outing. Tickets are sold at the gate and online via the club website weiche-liga.de. Home matches usually kick off Saturdays at 2 pm; the full schedule is on the club website.

Boxing — 'Flensburg boxt' and gala nights at the GP JOULE Arena

Boxing has a long tradition in Flensburg. Since the late 1970s the Dansk Gymnastikforening Flensborg (DGF) has shaped the scene — and out of its ranks came professional boxers like local hero Freddy Kiwitt, who today stages boxing galas in his hometown. The 'Flensburg boxt' event series regularly brings high-class professional bouts to the city — originally at the Deutsches Haus, now also at the GP JOULE Arena. These combined sports-and-show evenings, with international opponents, German title fights and occasional world title bouts, attract a mixed audience of sports fans and event-goers.

Dates and tickets are available via events-flensburg.de and the respective promoter sites. For an experience off the beaten tourist track — with real Flensburg flavour — a boxing gala is a strong recommendation.

Tennis & other clubs — from yachting to athletics

Tennis fans will find an unusual density of clubs in the region: Flensburger Tennis-Club (FTC) and Tennisclub Glücksburg regularly host tournaments and club matches open to spectators. In summer it's worth checking the calendar — Northern German Championships, senior tournaments and youth camps alternate. There are also numerous other clubs: sailing at Flensborg Yacht Club, rowing at Flensburger Ruder-Club, athletics at Stadion Süd. Even ice hockey is played in the ICEPOWER ARENA — the Flensburg Skerries are a real hidden gem for sport-loving winter evenings.

When is what on? — A seasonal calendar for sports fans

Handball season: August to May/June (Bundesliga, German Cup, European games). Football season: August to May (Regionalliga Nord). Boxing galas: usually spring and autumn, occasional winter highlights. Tennis: outdoor season May to September. Whatever your travel dates, you'll likely find a sports event — the biggest SG arena fixtures are often bookable from mid-August.

    Practical tips for visitors

By car is the easiest option from Villa Boreal (15–25 min depending on the venue). For SG games it pays to arrive early — the pre-match show with music, warm-up and the mascot Hugo is part of the experience. Before and after games, the harbour restaurants in Sonwik, the Piet Henningsen harbour bistro or Käpt'n Hannes are excellent stops. For shirts and souvenirs: the SG fan shop in Nikolaistraße sits right in the city centre — easy to combine with a stroll through the Red Courtyards or Norderstraße.

Sport as part of the Flensburg experience

Flensburg lives sport — quietly and with genuine pride. Anyone visiting should treat themselves to at least one match day, be it top-class handball in the 'Hell of the North' or a relaxed regional-league game at the Manfred-Werner-Stadion. It's a side of the region many tourists miss — and one that beautifully rounds off a stay at Villa Boreal. Now check availability and plan a sports evening.
