VILLA BOREAL JOURNAL · EVENTS & MARKETS
From the Rum Regatta in May to the crab market in Husum in October: this region celebrates all year – with world-class sailing, ancient fishing traditions, classical concerts in castles and Schleswig-Holstein's oldest weekly market.
Villa Boreal · Berglyk 8, Bockholm, Glücksburg · As of 2025/2026 · Dates without guarantee
Flensburg's Südermarkt has been a marketplace for 800 years – that says it all about this region. Tradition here needs no PR team: the Rum Regatta gives the prize to second place. Kappeln's herring contest crowns the king by catch weight. And the SHMF brings international stars to barns and castles.
Season opener with Northern Europe's largest maritime festivals
📍 Husum Castle Park · ~75 km · ~60 min
Every March around 4 million crocuses bloom in Husum's castle park – a sea of purple that turns the North Sea town into a natural spectacle for a few weeks. One of Germany's most famous spring phenomena. Park admission is free; a Crocus Bloom Queen is crowned during the bloom.
📍 Historic harbour Flensburg · ~19 km · ~20 min
Once a year Flensburg lies in the Caribbean. 100–120 historic gaff-riggers from all over Northern Europe gather in Flensburg's museum harbour the weekend after Ascension – the largest meet of former working sailing vessels in Northern Europe. The motto since 1980: »Better safe and second than broken and broader.« Second place gets a 3-litre bottle of rum.
Thursday: Flensburg Fjord regatta from Sønderborg to Flensburg + Lüttfischer regatta in the inner harbour. Friday: registration, rum collection, gaff market opens. Saturday: the actual Rum Regatta (start 11 a.m.), then prize-giving + gaff orchestra. The gaff market brings traditional crafts up close.
📍 Kappeln on the Schlei · ~50 km · ~45 min
At the same time as the Rum Regatta, Kappeln on the Schlei has been celebrating its biggest folk festival for over 40 years: the Herring Days. Centrepiece is the Ellenberg herring weir – the last functioning herring weir in all of Europe, dating from the 15th century.
Four days of harbour and town festival: two stages with live music, fairground, market traders, SUP races, sail-out parade. Travel possible by historic Angeln Steam Railway.
📍 Husum Castle Park · ~75 km · ~60 min
The official festival of the crocus bloom turns Husum's castle park into a spring fair with market stalls, crafts, concerts and the crowning of the Crocus Bloom Queen.
Sterling Cup, SHMF, harbour days and concerts in castles – peak season at the fjord
📍 Flensburger Segel-Club, Glücksburg · ~6 km · ~8 min
The most renowned classic-yacht meet in the Baltic takes place right in Glücksburg. Organised since 1995 by the Flensburger Segel-Club and Robbe & Berking, the Sterling Cup ranks among the most important meetings of historic sailing yachts worldwide. Boats must be built before 1970.
Numerous world and European championships have been held as part of the Sterling Cup. When the 12-metre yachts – veterans of America's Cup history – sail in from Danish Dyvig into the fjord, it's a sight you don't forget.
📍 Glücksburg Castle (SHMF venue!), Deutsches Haus Flensburg, Robbe & Berking shipyard and many more
The Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival (SHMF) lasts 8 weeks and is one of Europe's largest classical festivals. Founded in 1986, the concerts take place in historic barns, manor houses, village churches and castles.
Of particular interest to Villa Boreal guests: Glücksburg Castle (4 km!) is one of the most romantic SHMF venues. Concerts in the White Hall of the water castle. 2026: 4 July – 30 August.
📍 Harbour Husum · ~75 km · ~60 min
»Mok fast in Husum!« – with up to 200,000 visitors this is the largest maritime folk festival on Schleswig-Holstein's North Sea coast: five days along the festival mile around Husum harbour, live music on several stages, shrimp-cutter parade, fireworks.
📍 Solitüde beach, Flensburg · ~18 km · ~20 min
The Solitüde Festival is Flensburg's oldest town festival – a beach day with music, market, summer mood and the unique sandy-beach ambience of the bay of Meierwik.
📍 Museum harbour Flensburg → Glücksburg · ~19 km · ~20 min
On Schleswig-Holstein's last holiday weekend, all the ships of Flensburg's museum harbour sail together to Glücksburg – to load apples as cargo there and sell them on the way back. A heart-warming, contemplative event.
Shrimp in Husum, short films in Flensburg and Christmas preparations on the Schlei
📍 Harbour & town centre Husum · ~75 km · ~60 min
Every October Husum revolves around the North Sea shrimp. The colourful shrimp cutters moor in the inner harbour and sell fresh catch. Along the harbour mile: stalls, crafts market, show cooking and the shrimp-peeling championship. Shops open Sunday.
📍 Programmkino 51 Stufen, Deutsches Haus Flensburg · ~19 km · ~20 min

Christmas markets, castle backdrop and the Grogtörn as a festive year-end
📍 Holm, Südermarkt, Nordermarkt, Große Straße · ~19 km · ~20 min
From late November Flensburg's Christmas market transforms the entire town centre: Holm, Große Straße, Nordermarkt and Südermarkt are dotted with huts offering Scandinavian crafts, egg grog and Christmas treats. The market runs daily until New Year's Eve.
