The Fördesteig trail runs directly through Bockholm-Berglyk – no other holiday home in the region sits so directly on one of the most beautiful coastal hiking trails in northern Germany.
Two coastal trails of European calibre – one runs right through Berglyk
Designed by NABU, the trail runs 95 km from the Danish border to Kappeln – the German counterpart to the Danish Gendarmstien. Stage 6 (Bockholm → Langballigau, ~7 km) literally starts at our doorstep: Bockholmwik natural beach, the Siegumlund cliffs, woodland paths to Langballigau. Sightings of harbour porpoises from the trail are not uncommon.
Awarded as Denmark's first European Quality Trail in 2015. The finest stage from Bockholm: Kollund → Sønderhav (~6 km along the Fjordvejen, right by the water) – ending at Annie's Kiosk with a hot dog and panoramic views of the Ochsen Islands.
Waymarked loops in nature reserves – just lace up and go
From Berglyk 8 on foot to Bockholmwik natural beach, then a ~5 km loop: along the beach, through Siegum forest, across meadows, returning via Siegumlund. A barely-visited wild rose coast, fjord views to Denmark, forest stillness. Dogs allowed, no admission.
From the turning area to Holnis Point (Germany's north-easternmost point!), along the north beach and back across the salt marshes. May be impassable during storm surges – check with NABU in advance.
To the sailor's grave on the north beach, then across the salt marsh to Holnis cliff: from 23 m up you survey the entire Flensburg Fjord – inner and outer fjord at once, Germany and Denmark side by side. Return via Kleines Noor (a rare salt biotope, flooded in 2002).
One of the loveliest near-natural stream valleys in Schleswig-Holstein – barely known. The Langballigau winds between steep slopes, with a boardwalk through bog and steps up the banks. Start at Unewatt (Angeln landscape museum), midway fish rolls at Langballigau harbour, then back.
From Glücksburg castle along the fjord shore via Sandwig, Schausende, Holnis lighthouse, the cliff (23 m), Strand Drei and back via Bockholm to Berglyk 8. The route ends right at the villa – no return transport needed. Refreshments at Strandcafé Holnis or the kiosk at Strand Drei.
Paved coastal routes, cross-border tours and European long-distance cycle paths
From Glücksburg through idyllic forest to the Holnis peninsula, around the tip with open sea views, returning via Munkbrarup and Bockholm. A perfect half-day ride for beginners – park the bike on Holnis and walk the short distance to the point.
An official long-distance cycle route running directly through Glücksburg, Langballigau and Westerholz – literally at the doorstep. Day stage Glücksburg → Langballigau (~20 km, flat) is ideal for beginners. From Langballigau, optionally take the cycle ferry to Denmark.
The flagship route of fjord cycling: 307 km around the Flensburg Fjord through Germany and Denmark, taking in seven castles – Glücksburg, Brundlund, Sønderborg, Gråsten, Augustenborg, Nordborg. As a day stage: Glücksburg → Kollund (DK) → Sønderhav (~25 km).
Through the Angeln hinterland: Langballigau → Satrup → Munkbrarup (Svensteen organic farm!) and back to Berglyk. Romanesque churches, megalithic graves, blossoming hedgerow landscape, very little traffic. Start straight from the villa.
