Their rhythm, their sector colours, their character — all of it was navigation in its purest form. The four towers of the region are today monuments, excursion destinations and photo motifs — and from [Villa Boreal](/en) all reachable in less than 30 minutes. HISTORY ## Why does a fjord need lighthouses? The Flensburg Fjord is 45 km long and dotted with shallows: Kalkgrund, Bredgrund, Schleisand. In the 19th century, Flensburg was one of Northern Europe's most important trading ports — rum from the Caribbean, timber from Scandinavia, grain from the Baltic. Each lighthouse had its own character: a unique flashing pattern and coloured sectors that separate safe channels from dangerous shallows. On the island: a paddler stopover and the legendary „Giftbude" (small inn). History Formerly a pilot station (until 1980). The island has been owned by the Lighthouse Foundation since 2008. At sunset, when the light over the Danish archipelago turns golden — that is one of the most beautiful moments in this region. Our recommendation: a walk through the Geltinger Birk nature reserve, then climb the lighthouse, then a sundowner with a view of Denmark. ## Conclusion Four towers, four stories — and four entirely different ways to experience them.
