Bockholmwik is an unspoilt stretch of coast right outside the door — no organised bathing area, no high-season restrictions. Dogs are allowed all year, with leash duty during the breeding season (April–July) along the bluff. Early mornings here are magical: the fjord in mist, no one around, just your dog and the water. Season: year-round dog-friendly Leash: April–July along the bluff Parking: free at Café Bock 19 💡 Down to the water before breakfast, let the dog romp, then Café Bock 19 for coffee — the perfect fjord morning with a dog. 02 ~16 km · 20 min Off-season only ### Langballigau — dogs outside the season ~16 km · 20 min · sandy beach · dogs allowed 1 Oct – 30 Apr Sandy beach Dogs Oct–April Harbour atmosphere The small harbour of Langballigau with its sandy beach and breakwater. From 1 October to 30 April the entire beach is open to dogs — ideal for long autumn and winter walks accompanied by gull cries and harbour scenery. In high season (1 May – 30 Sep) dogs are banned from the bathing beach, but the harbour path and breakwater remain open. Season: Dogs 1 Oct – 30 Apr everywhere; otherwise harbour only Leash: compulsory on the breakwater Parking: free at the harbour 💡 November in a storm: a walk along the breakwater, then mulled wine at the harbour restaurant — pure North Sea atmosphere on the Baltic. 03 ~12 km · 15 min Allowed year-round Tip ### Holnis natural beach — west side year-round ~12 km · 15 min · Holnis peninsula west side · natural beach · dogs always allowed Natural beach Dogs all year Holnis cliff 23 m Panoramic view The west side of the Holnis peninsula (Quellental, Holnis tip) is dog-friendly all year — unlike the organised bathing beach 'Holnis Drei' on the east side. A natural shore with little infrastructure, but the most spectacular fjord panorama from the Holnis cliff. In the Holnis nature reserve (the tip) leashes are mandatory to protect breeding and resting birds. Season: year-round Leash: compulsory in the Holnis-Spitze reserve Parking: few spaces at the lighthouse 💡 Early on the Holnis cliff: sunrise over the Danish coast, your dog sniffing through the heather — one of the loveliest spots in the region. 04 ~18 km · 20 min Off-season only ### Solitüde Flensburg — outside the season ~18 km · 20 min · Flensburg's bathing beach · dogs 1 Oct – 30 Apr Sandy beach Dogs Oct–April Dune landscape Flensburg's large bathing beach is fully dog-friendly from 1 October to 30 April. The wide sandy beach with dunes is perfect for long winter marches — the dog can run, with Flensburg's silhouette in the background. In summer (1 May – 30 Sep) dogs are banned from the bathing area, but the coastal path towards Fahrensodde stays open. Season: Dogs 1 Oct – 30 Apr Leash: off outside the season Parking: free, several lots 05 ~22 km · 25 min Relaxed in practice ### Wassersleben at the DK border — very relaxed ~22 km · 25 min · border beach · dog-tolerant tradition Sandy beach Dog-tolerant 300 m to the DK border Wassersleben is officially a bathing beach with the usual high-season rules, but its proximity to the Danish border and its long, broad shoreline mean dogs are traditionally tolerated here. East of the main bathing area there is a freer stretch towards the border. Walk 400 m north and you cross via the Schusterkate bridge into Denmark — and into Danish law (see next card). Season: Dogs 1 Oct – 30 Apr at the main beach Leash: recommended in high season Tip: 400 m north = Denmark 💡 Combo walk: Wassersleben across the Schusterkate bridge to Kollund (DK) — the border is a narrow stone path, the dog won't notice, suddenly you're abroad. 06 ~25 km · 30 min Denmark Very dog-friendly ### Kollund (DK) — barely any rules, plenty of beach ~25 km · 30 min · Danish fjord shore · very dog-friendly Natural beach Dogs Apr–Sep on leash Off-leash otherwise Forest & beach Kollund Strand on the Danish side of the fjord is one of the region's best dog destinations. Danish beach law: from 1 October to 31 March dogs may run off-leash anywhere; from 1 April to 30 September leashes are required — but dogs are allowed year-round, with no outright ban as on the German side. Add to that the Kollund Skov directly behind the beach: a dense coastal forest with trails where many dogs run free. Season: year-round access Leash: 1 Apr – 30 Sep required, otherwise off Parking: free along the beach road 💡 Even with leash rules, a top spot in summer: beach, forest and Café Annies Kiosk in Sønderhav for smørrebrød with the dog on the terrace. 🌿 ## Walking trails with your dog Four routes on which you and your dog can experience the fjord 4 routes 07 From the doorstep 5–25 km ### Fördesteig from Bockholm Right from Villa Boreal · 5–25 km · cliff-top path Cliff coast Dogs welcome Marked long-distance trail The Fördesteig is an 80 km premium hiking trail looping the Flensburg Fjord — and it passes right through Bockholm. You can set off from the villa: south towards Holnis (~10 km, half-day) or north towards Langballigau (~14 km). The path mostly follows the cliff edge with fjord panorama. Sturdy shoes, water bottle for the dog, leash for the village stretches. Start: Berglyk 8, Bockholm Leash: in villages and along the bluff (breeding season) Surface: forest, meadow and sandy paths 💡 Day trip: Bockholm → Langballigau → lunch at the harbour → bus 71 back. Dogs allowed on the bus (small free, large fare ticket). 08 8 km loop Reserve: leash required ### Holnis peninsula — loop over the tip ~12 km · 15 min drive · approx. 8 km loop · nature reserve Heath & cliffs Dog on leash Birdwatching The classic: a loop walk over the Holnis peninsula with lighthouse, Holnis cliff (23 m), heath and beaches on both sides. The entire Holnis-Spitze nature reserve requires leashes to protect breeding and resting birds — that's a restriction, not a ban. With a long line your dog stays happy. Outside the reserve (in Holnis village and along the western edge) off-leash roaming is fine again. Start: Lighthouse Holnis car park Leash: required year-round inside the reserve Surface: meadow paths, sand, asphalt in the village 💡 Migration season (March/April and September/October) is a spectacle here: thousands of geese and waders rest — keep your dog very close. 09 5 km loop Off-leash possible ### Langballigau valley — gorge forest by the fjord ~16 km · 20 min drive · ~5 km loop · stream valley Stream gorge Shaded in summer Off-leash OK The Langballigau valley is a small, enchanted gorge where a stream runs through old beech forest down to the fjord. Shaded, cool, ideal in summer for dogs that don't tolerate heat. The stream offers drinking spots and paw-cooling everywhere. Soft paths, hardly any cyclists, hardly any tourists. The end point is Langballigau harbour (see beach tip 02). Start: Mühlenweg car park, Langballigholz Leash: relaxed in the forest (mind game crossings) Highlight: stream for drinking & cooling 💡 The insider tip for hot summer days: it's always 5 °C cooler than at the beach, and the dog can cool off in the stream. 10 ~30 km · 35 min Strict leash rule ### Geltinger Birk — wild horses & nature reserve ~30 km · 35 min · 770 ha reserve · Konik wild horses Reserve 770 ha Wild horses Always on leash The largest coastal nature reserve on the Schleswig-Holstein Baltic shore: Geltinger Birk with salt marshes, lagoons, beach ridge and a herd of semi-wild Konik horses. Several marked loops (3–10 km), observation towers, bird hides. Dogs are welcome, but strict leash rules apply throughout the reserve — the wild horses, breeding birds and cattle don't tolerate loose dogs. Accept that and you'll experience one of the wildest landscapes in northern Germany. Dogs are welcome on every outdoor terrace. Ideal after a long autumn beach walk — sweater on, mulled wine, dog under the table. Address: Hafen Langballigau, 24977 Langballig Dog: all outdoor areas 💡 Winter tip: a hot fish roll plus mulled wine on the sheltered bench at the harbour head. Dog in the sand. North Sea feeling on the Baltic. 📋 ### Rules & season at a glance High season Germany **1 May – 30 September:** at designated bathing beaches (Sandwig, Solitüde, Holnis Drei, Wassersleben, Langballigau Strand) dogs are banned. Natural shores like Bockholm, the Holnis west side and Quellental remain open year-round. Nature reserves **Holnis tip, Geltinger Birk:** year-round leash duty to protect breeding and resting birds and the Konik wild horses. Dogs are welcome — please use a long line, never let them run free. Denmark — a touch more relaxed **1 April – 30 September:** leash duty on every Danish beach. **1 October – 31 March:** dogs may run free.
