# Things to Do in Flensburg: 10 Highlights Between Harbour, Courtyards and Nordertor

Flensburg is Germany's northernmost town — and one of its most surprising. Between harbour and hillside, brick buildings, merchant courtyards and church spires tell 700 years of trade in rum, sugar and seafaring. Most of Flensburg's sights sit close together and are easy to explore on foot. From Villa Boreal in Bockholm, the town centre is about a 20 to 25-minute drive. Here are the ten highlights you should not miss.

## 1. The Nordertor — Flensburg's landmark

The Nordertor was built around 1595 and once marked the town's northern boundary. Its red-brick stepped gable is now the most photographed spot in town. Look out for the inscription “Peace nourishes, discord consumes” — a fitting motto for this border region.

## 2. Historic harbour & museum harbour

Along the western quay, sailing ships, cutters and traditional vessels lie at anchor. The museum harbour displays historic ships, including the 1908 saloon steamer “Alexandra”, which takes passengers out onto the fjord in summer. In the evening the old town lights reflect on the water — perfect for a stroll.

## 3. Maritime Museum & Rum Museum

Flensburg's Maritime Museum shows how the town grew rich through West Indies trade and shipping. In the vaulted cellar, the Rum Museum recalls the era when Flensburg was known as the “rum town”. Our article on the town's history offers more background.

## 4. Merchant courtyards & Oluf-Samson-Gang

Behind the façades of Große Straße and Rote Straße lie long, narrow merchant courtyards that once stretched down to the harbour. Many now house cafés, studios and small shops. The Oluf-Samson-Gang, with its colourful crooked cottages, is one of the most picturesque lanes in northern Germany.

## 5. St Nicholas & St Mary's

The brick churches of St Nicholas on Südermarkt and St Mary's on Nordermarkt shape the old town skyline. Both date back to the Middle Ages and are worth a look inside — especially the magnificent organ of St Nicholas.

## 6. Museumsberg Flensburg — art and cultural history

Above the old town, the Museumsberg brings together art and cultural history of the Schleswig region — from farmhouse parlours to Art Nouveau rooms by Flensburg artist Hans Christiansen. It also offers a lovely view over the rooftops.

## 7. Phänomenta — hands-on science

Right next to the Nordertor, the Phänomenta invites visitors to try out countless interactive experiments. A great choice for families and rainy days — children and adults alike explore physics and perception for themselves.

## 8. Flensburg Brewery

“Flens”, with its iconic swing-top bottle, is known far beyond the region. The Flensburger Brauerei offers guided tours of the brewhouse and bottling line. Read more about the brewing tradition on the fjord in our brewery article.

## 9. Pedestrian zone, Holm & Südermarkt

The shopping street from the Nordertor to Südermarkt links most of the sights. Between half-timbering and brick you'll find owner-run shops, delicatessens and cafés — and in winter the Flensburg Christmas market.

## 10. Harbour tip & east shore

At the harbour tip, old town and fjord meet. Grab a fish sandwich by the water, then cross to the east shore for a panoramic view of the old town. If you like, continue towards the Volkspark for views across the fjord.

## Our one-day route through Flensburg

Start at the Nordertor, pop into the Phänomenta if you like, and stroll along Große Straße with detours into the merchant courtyards. At lunchtime, a fish sandwich by the harbour, then the Maritime and Rum Museums. In the afternoon, head up to the Museumsberg or over to the east shore. Back in Bockholm, the sauna with a view of the fjord awaits — the perfect end to a city day.
